Experiment Method

Aim: Which brand of paper towel is more effective in absorbing a substance

Method:
1. The three substances (water beer and BBQ sauce) were measured to give 5mL.
2. The paper towels were measured to ensure all 5 different paper towels were the same size and mass.
3. The substance was poured out into an equal area.
4. The paper towel was placed over the area. After 10 seconds it was removed.
5. Step 4 was repeated until the substance disappeared.
6. Steps 3-5 were repeated for the other two substances.
7. Observations and results were recorded.

Results:
Intended to be in a table format.
E.g.
How many paper towels it takes to absorb a substance:

Brand 1

Brand 2

Brand 3

Brand 4

Brand 5

Substance 1 – Water

Substance 2 – Beer

Substance 3 – BBQ sauce

AVERAGE IS THEN CALCULATED

Observations recorded afterwards on each individual paper towel's reaction to the substance.

Column graph is also produced to show comparison in the number of paper towels needed for each brand to absorb substance.

N.B. This experiment has not be conducted YET.
Therefore method and recording of the results may change. However, presently, this is the most likely to be the method and result recording for the experiment.

Progress 5

"Which brand of paper towels is more effective in absorbing a liquid"

Independent variable:
  • Paper towels - 5 different brands of paper towel to carry out the experiment.
Controlled variable:
  • Amount - only one paper towel will be used to absorb the liquid
  • Liquid - the liquid will be kept consistent by setting up a perimeter in which the liquid could travel.
Recorded by how long it takes the paper towel to completely absorb the type of liquid.

Background research -
  • Weaving patterns on the paper towel and how the weaving pattern helps to absorb the liquid. How each paper towel has a different weaving pattern - factor which controls the absorbing ability of the paper towels
  • Paper towels - purpose and how it is effective

Progress 4 - Project decided (=

Research: The time it requires for water to dissolve a certain amount of salt

Independent variable:
  • The amount of salt - 5g, 10g, 15g, 20g, 25g
Controlled variables:
  • Amount of water (100 mL)
  • Environment - shaded area to prevent the sun evaporating the water
To determine when the salt is completely dissolved:
  • When the researcher (THATS ME) and another witness (probably my sister) agree that the salt has completely dissolved.
OR
  • When there isn't a trace of salt left in the container .. if the other witness is not available to help

Progress 3

Ideas for SRP:

1. What affects the flight of an aeroplane.
  • Would be difficult to maintain the force used to throw each aeroplane.
2. At what temperature does water freeze best (using 10 degress difference)
  • Time management has to be accurate.
  • Have to work out when the water freezes (i.e. no water droplets remains.)
3. The time it requires for water to completely dissolve a certain amount of salt.
  • Same amount of water
  • Salt increase by 5 grams each time
4. Which shopping bag (out of 5) can carry the most weight before breaking.
  • Determine how 'breaking' is measured

Progress 2

  • Decided to start thinking about other areas and not just aeroplanes

Progress 1

  • Looked on the internet for some ideas about what to do.
  • Came across some things on aeroplanes.
  • Researched more on aeroplanes and the physics included in it.
  • Decided to do something related to aeroplanes.
